Former Tesco trading manager Martyn Barrett is spearheading the launch of a convenience store cum farmers’ market that aims to rival Whole Foods.

Funded by Odey Asset Management, the chain – called Union Market – is to debut in London next month with a view to opening an initial portfolio of 15 shops nationwide.

It is understood the stores will resemble a foodhall, with bakery, butchers, prepared food counter and fresh produce section, alongside a cafe. The concept is aiming to rival Whole Foods in terms of offer, but with more affordable prices.

Barrett – who previously worked with Selfridges on its foodhall – is retail director, and Aylie Cooke, formerly at Whole Foods, has joined as head of buying.

Union Market has set up a website to advertise for new suppliers to come on board.
