The managing director of Tesco’s superstores Tony Hoggett is to move to head Tesco Extra.

Retail-Week.com can reveal Hoggett will take on the role after more than a decade with the business.

It is understood he will replace Claire Peters who became operations director for Extra in 2009 before becoming managing director of the business.

Hoggett, who started off as a store manager, will be charged with leading Tesco’s largest stores at a time when debate is raging among industry commentators over the future of the hypermarket.

Hoggett was brought back into the UK business in April 2011 at the start of chief executive Philip Clarke’s reign at Tesco.

He had been in Tesco’s overseas business for four years. He was managing director for Tesco in south China before being promoted to vice president for China.

Hoggett then became chief operating officer at Tesco Kipa in Turkey before moving back to the UK to run its superstore division when the grocer merged its previous separate north and south management set up.

He has been at the forefront of Tesco’s decision to trial new Food-to-Go outlets in store and is also enacting Clarke’s £1bn plan to ‘Build a better Tesco’ by improving the in-store environment.

Tesco confirmed the move but declined to comment. It is unclear who will replace Hoggett as superstores managing director or whether the move is part of a wider management shake up.
