Amazon is slashing hundreds of jobs across its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division.
The ecommerce giant said the cuts will affect “a few hundred roles” in the physical stores technology team as well as roles in sales, marketing and global services.
The news follows another announcement by Amazon that it is scrapping its self-checkout system Just Walk Out from all stores in the US.
In response to the job cuts, an AWS spokesperson said: “These decisions are difficult but necessary as we continue to invest, hire and optimise resources to deliver innovation for our customers.”
The company added that it will continue to “hire and grow” mainly in the core areas of the business and that thousands of AWS job openings are being posted online.
The cuts will be made globally but Amazon said it is working to find internal opportunities for staff whose roles are impacted.
It added that US-based employees will receive pay and benefits for at least 60 days and access to transitional health benefits, as well as being eligible for severance pay.
The roles being axed follow a previous round of cuts at Amazon when hundreds of jobs across subsidiaries Twitch, Prime Video and MGM Studios were made redundant.
The news follows a wider pattern of job cuts across the tech sector over the past year, with companies such as Google, Microsoft and eBay slashing hundreds of roles.
