This year 90 per cent of shoppers will turn to the internet to research and buy their Christmas gifts.

Around 68 per cent of shoppers are planning to do at least half of their shopping online, according to research by the IMRG in partnership with eDigitalResearch.

Consumers surveyed said that they were turning to online to find the best bargains as the recession continues to affect Christmas purchasing decisions.

EDigitalResearch director Chris Russell said: “Online retailers should provide help and support throughout the purchase process, especially concerning the after-sales service, to help build brand loyalty - the equivalent of the gold standard in this economic climate.”

Monday is expected to be the biggest day of the year online with e-tailers including Play.com expecting bumper sales. Play.com said sales could soar by 25 per cent year on year, with 936 orders a minute at peak trading hours.
