Dubbed Biza, intended to evoke images of a bazaar and oriental mystery, according to the company, the stores, that are located in Newcastle, Manchester and East Midlands airports, are planned to provide shoppers with a brand-led identity, rather being a series of brands under one catch-all roof.
London design consultancy HMKM, which has created interiors for luxury retailers including Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason, has worked on the project with a brief to provide an airport shop that should be different from traditional tax-free spaces.
The largest of the new stores will be the 22,000 sq ft shop in Manchester’s Terminal 1, due for completion in the autumn.
Alpha Airports was acquired by the €4.8 billion (£3.78 billion) Italian company Autogrill in 2007 and it operates in 44 airports in 13 countries.
