Electricals giant Best Buy is launching an online marketplace in the US to help it compete with internet rival Amazon.
Its marketplace will sell items from other retailers to give customers a broader selection. Its third party network includes online retailer Buy.com.
Best Buy chief executive Brian J. Dunn said: “Best Buy Marketplace is a key development to our multi-channel platform. As we continue to grow our online business, Best Buy Marketplace is an element that enables consumers to shop how they want and encourages additional reasons to visit and purchase at BestBuy.com.”
The retailer has suffered in recent times from customers visiting its stores to research products but using their smartphones to buy at lower prices online.
A third more products will be added to its website in the run up to Christmas when the marketplace goes live.
Best Buy senior vice president and general manager of online operations John Thompson said: “Increased assortment of products, brands and price points is exactly what people have told us they want. We listened, and developed Marketplace to meet these unmet needs.”
Although items fulfilled by Best Buy Marketplace are clearly noted, transactions are made using a single shopping basket. Fulfillment is carried out by the third party sellers although Best Buy offers a guarantee to ensure customer satisfaction.
