European expansion planned
US computer giant Apple is to extend its retail operations into Germany, with stores planned for Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich. The über-cool laptops-to-iPods manufacturer is hoping to capitalise on the huge success it has enjoyed with its US and UK flagship Apple stores. A site in Rome is also being mooted.

Apple first launched its distinctive flagship stores - which feature free tutorials, on-site experts and product demonstrations - in the US market. The format debuted in the UK on London's Regent Street and has since opened at Bluewater, Birmingham and Sheffield, with another planned for Manchester.

Last week, Apple reported record sales and earnings. Revenue for the quarter to December 31 rose to US$5.75 billion (£3.25 billion) from US$3.39 billion (£1.91 billion) the year before. Profits almost doubled from US$295 million (£166.6 million) to US$565 million (£319 million).
