General workers union GMB is balloting its members for strike action about collective bargaining rights at the supermarket's 20 distribution depots.
Asda claims the union is overstating the size of its membership, which would distort any ballot result. The GMB says almost two-thirds of Asda's 12,500 distribution workers are members, but the supermarket believes the real figure is far closer to 4,500.
Industrial action may take place during the World Cup quarter finals weekend in two weeks time and could have a devastating effect on trade. Results of the ballot are due this Wednesday.
Last week, the GMB expressed concerns that Asda was planning to break the law by employing agency staff to replace any staff on strike.
A final attempt at talks between the two parties failed last week.
