Asda has hit out against Tesco’s launch this week of an online price checker, arguing that it does not match the “independence and integrity” of the Asda Price Guarantee.
Tesco launched its online service on Monday, just weeks after branding Asda’s tool as misleading and time consuming. Tesco accompanied the launch of its price check facility with £200m of price cuts.
An Asda spokeswoman said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” but maintained: “Tesco still has some way to go before it can match our low prices or the independence and integrity of the Asda Price Guarantee.”
The Asda Price Guarantee is independently verified by price checker Mysupermarket.
A Tesco spokeswoman said its price checker is a “subsidiary part” of its campaign. “The real message is the £200m of price cuts,” she said. “We’re simply putting our money where our mouth is and if customers want to check, we will refund any differences.”
Asda, along with Tesco, was this week shown to be lagging the market according to the latest Kantar Worldpanel grocery data, despite chief executive Andy Clarke’s claim last week that the Walmart-owned grocer had returned to “outperformance”.
Asda’s spokeswoman said that the Kantar data “reflects the race for space, not like-for-like performance”.
