The grocer also said it was carrying out a complete review of its own-label packaging, in an effort to reduce to amount of waste its customers are forced to throw away. It plans to reduce the weight and volume of packaging by 10 per cent over the next 18 months.
Asda has already removed unnecessary cardboard sleeves from a number of its ready meals and reduced the thickness of its carrier bags by 15 per cent.
Last year, the retailer opened four new recycling facilities at Lutterworth, Wakefield, Skelmersdale and Bedford.
