In an interview with The Times, chief executive Nick Robertson said that Asos could become bigger than Next online in the next two to three years. Asos is currently number two in the country, with a 5 per cent share of the online fashion market. Next has a 7 per cent share.
“The opportunity still exists for someone to be the dominant player in the fashion space. It will be Asos and it should be Asos,” said Robertson. “Our goal is to overtake Next in terms of traffic and we are increasingly nudging towards that.”
On Wednesday, Asos is expected to announce in its trading statement that sales growth over the summer was about 90 per cent.
At the start of this month, Asos launched clearance site Asos Red to take market share from the likes of high street player TK Maxx. It is currently ahead of fashion giants such as Topshop and Marks & Spencer in terms of online traffic.
With profits of just over£8 million, analysts warn that it could still face serious challenges as bigger high street fashion retailers invest more in their online operations.
Asos was set up 10 years ago, then called As Seen on Screen, and now offers more than 600 brands and a growing own-label offer.
