German sex goods retailer Beate Uhse has dumped the UK market less than three years after the relationship started.
The retailer opened its first UK store in Sutton in November 2002 and vowed to take on Ann Summers in the erotic lingerie market.
At the time, chief financial officer Otto Lindemann said the business had the resources to open a raft of new stores quickly. A second outlet opened in Wandsworth, London, in December last year, but the mooted expansion never came.
Both shops closed at the beginning of July. Property firm Briant Champion Long confirmed it had been instructed to dispose of the stores.
There are more than 200 Beate Uhse shops across Europe, most of which are aimed at men. The UK shops were a softer store-type, targeted at women and couples.
It is understood that Beate Uhse is taking this format back to the continent and has switched the focus to its home market.
