- John Lewis partners will not be able to buy online bargains from their employer
- They will be allowed to make in-store purchases
- Decision is expected to relieve Black Friday strain on website
Department store John Lewis has banned its staff from using their discounts to snap up online bargains on Black Friday this year.
John Lewis took the decision in order to “deliver a good shopping experience for our customers” during the promotional bonanza, the Daily Mail reported.
This year Black Friday is expected to generate sales of as much as £1.9bn for retailers as consumers splash out on discounted products and is forecast to be the busiest shopping day of the year.
John Lewis’ decision should help ensure its website performs under the pressures of Black Friday and that customers rather than employees benefit from the money-off deals.
The John Lewis partner discount entitles staff to 12% off electricals and a 25% discount on other products.
John Lewis staff will still be able to use their discount on Black Friday items in its stores.
A wide range of retailers is expected to take part in Black Friday tomorrow and some have already begun extended promotions. Others, such as Asda, have turned their backs on the event.
The introduction of Black Friday in the UK has divided retail opinion. While some have proved able to make the most of the occasion, others have suffered hits to margin and believe the promtion simply spreads out sales rather than generating additional spend.
