Brazilian supermarket sales continued to top last year’s figures in June, according to the Brazilian Supermarkets Association (Abras), leading to increased optimism for growth over the year.

Supermarket sales in June increased 4.8 per cent in real terms compared with June last year, the trade group said.

Abras raised its forecast for sales growth in 2009 to 4.5 per cent on the back of the figures – up from a previous forecast of 2.5 per cent growth.

The Brazilian market is dominated by Carrefour, Casino and Wal-Mart.
