The Government is raising the adult national minimum wage to£5.05 on October 1. The Low Pay Commission, which advises the Government, has recommended a further 6 per cent increase (£5.35) to come in next month.
Findings of the survey will be published in mid-November and will show the projected impact of an increase to£5.35 and the likely impact of the increase to£5.05.
A BRC study last year showed that the rise in minimum wage to£4.85 in 2004 cost retailers£1.7 billion.
BRC director-general Kevin Hawkins said: 'Above-inflation increases to the minimum wage are proving very difficult for both larger and smaller retailers to absorb. The sector employs 2.8 million people - 11 per cent of the UK workforce. Ill-thought out decisions on the minimum wage will hit retailers hard.'
