Pym, who is also chairman of motor accessories specialist Halfords, will advise the board on strategy and operations, as well as ensuring corporate governance standards are adhered to and effective shareholder communication.
BrightHouse chief executive Leo McKee said: “Richard’s leadership of the board will further accelerate our growth potential.”
Pym said that BrightHouse’s recent ownership change – Vision Capital took control last June – made it an exciting time to join the business.
His previous experience includes stints as chief executive of Alliance & Leicester and finance roles at Burton Group.
BrightHouse sells electrical and household goods to low-income shoppers on a weekly payment basis.
