British Bookshops and Stationers has put most of its 600-plus store staff in consultation.
The bookseller, bought by private equity firm Endless in May, has already cut 30 jobs out of 100 last month at its warehouse and head office in Brighton.
New chief executive John Simpson said he has taken action to “get the business in shape so it doesn’t go bust”. He is unsure how many jobs may go. The consultation is likely to last until the end of this month.
Simpson said: “We want to preserve as many jobs as we can.”
➤ Trade buyers and investors are said to be looking at Borders UK after a memorandum was released last month. The situation remains unclear but it is thought a disposal of some stores is deemed necessary. Borders did not return calls.
