Card Factory was founded in Wakefield by Dean and Janet Hoyle. The couple, who started by buying cards wholesale and selling them from the back of their van at car boot sales, opened their first bricks-and-mortar location in 1997. In November 2008, Card Factory acquired 80 stores from rival greetings card retailer Celebrations, and by the time the Hoyles sold the business to Charterhouse for £350m in April 2010, Card Factory had 480 shops. In 2015, Card Factory unveiled its own website. Card Factory operates more than 1,000 stores, boasting a presence in most major high streets and shopping centres across the UK.

Card Factory group sales rose 10.3% year on year to £510.9m in the year to 31 January 2024 (FY2023) with the retailer hailing its “continued positive momentum across the business” and “effective execution” of its strategy. Total sales growth reflected an 8.7% increase in store sales to £478.9m, while total online sales fell 15% to £14.7m.
