DVD and CD sales continue to outperform the growing download market, according to research released today.
Sales of CDs in 2008 fell just 6.4 per cent despite large entertainment retailers including Play.com and Amazon introducing download services this year.
According to the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) 10.3 million albums were downloaded to customers' PCs and MP3 players.
DVD sales were helped by big blockbusters including Mama Mia and The Dark Knight with sales up 1.9 per cent last year.
The ERA said that the economic downturn has pushed more people to stay at home which has helped entertainment retailers with the combined sales of music, games and DVDs up 4 per cent to 485.8 million units.
