The brunt of the decline came from the Clinton brand, where like-for-like sales plunged by 7.1 per cent.
Sales at Birthdays fell by a more modest 2.5 per cent.
The retailer reported that it has opened 12 new stores and closed 21 since the beginning of the financial period, giving it a 1,042-strong store portfolio comprised of 697 Clinton stores and 345 Bithdays outlets.
