Consumer price inflation rose during October for the first time since February.

The Consumer Prices Index rate of annual inflation reached 1.5% last month compared to 1.1% in September.

Transport costs powered the increase, but food and alcoholic drinks also contributed. Prices of the latter increased by more than a year ago, the Office for national Statistics reported, as meat, bread, cereal and vegetables all generated upward pressure.

The prices of recording media, such as DVDs, also rose as did those of toys, games and hobbies – in particular computer games.

Retail Prices Index annual inflation fell by 0.8%, a slowdown from the 1.4% decline recorded in September.
