People convicted of participating in riots and looting in Manchester last week are to be banned from the city centre.
The exclusion will be enforced for two years and will apply to men, women and children the Manchester Evening News reported.
The thugs will be barred from every store in the city’s Arndale centre, the Triangle, Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and House of Fraser-owned Kendals.
The initiative has been spearheaded by CityCo, Manchester city centre’s management firm, along with the council and the police. A rioter image database will be created and shared with retailers.
Rob Dyson, head of CityCo’s business crime reduction partnership, told the Manchester Evening News: “The public disorder last week has had a tremendous impact on our retailers and has damaged the local economy.
“We want to send out a strong message that Manchester’s business community is standing together and those that disrespect our city are not welcome and will not be allowed to enjoy it.”
Pat Karney, Manchester council’s city-centre spokesman, said: “The civil exclusion scheme is already doing a fantastic job and it makes sense to add these disgraceful individuals, who show complete disregard for others people’s property, to the list.”
So far more than 230 people had been arrested following last week’s the disturbances in Manchester city centre and Salford. Over 130 have been charged.
