Christmas footfall highest since pandemic as strikes spur shoppers to high street
The number of shoppers visiting high streets and malls rose in 2022, but retail park numbers decreased, the latest figures suggest.
The BRC - Local Data Company Vacancy Monitor is a quarterly monitor that tracks the vacancy rate changes to the UK retail landscapes (retail park, high street, shopping centre) as they evolve since Q1 2019.

UK retail saw a lift in footfall in March thanks to Mother’s Day and nice weather, but the effects of the Budget are expected to take hold in April.
UK retail in February saw a rise in footfall across all destinations as shoppers took advantage of the half-term break and Valentine’s Day.
UK footfall rose in January following a dissapointing festive season, as cash concious shoppers descended on UK retail destinations in the hunt for bargains.
December’s footfall numbers did not provide the hope that retailers were looking for ahead of 2025.
