Retail sales by value rose year on year and month on month in June as online stores continued to perform strongly.
Sales, excluding fuel, advanced 1.5% year on year over the month, and were up 1.7% by volume, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Month on month, the increases were 13.1% and 13.5% respectively.
On a three-month basis, however, sales were down 7.2% by value and 6.6% by value.
The proportion of online spending was 31.8% in June, down from a record 33.3% in May but far ahead of the 20% reported in February.
The ONS said that monthly increases in retail sales volumes in May and June ”have brought total sales to a similar level as before the coronavirus pandemic” but there was ”a mixed picture in different store types”.
Sales at non-food stores climbed 45.5% on a monthly basis but ”levels have still not recovered from the sharp falls experienced in March and April”.
Food stores and non-store retailing ”both reached new high levels since the start of the pandemic”. Food sales were up 5.3% by volume and non-store retailing by 53.6% compared to February.
