Debenhams liquidates Irish arm as it appoints administrators

Debenhams Cork

Ailing department store chain Debenhams has appointed administrators for the second time in 12 months and has liquidated its Irish business.

In a statement issued today, Debenhams said it had appointed administrators from FRP Advisory and would be liquidating its Irish operations and will be permanently closing its 11 remaining department stores in the Republic of Ireland.

Debenhams said it had entered administration to protect the group for the threat of legal action that “could have the effect of pushing the business into liquidation” given that its 142 remaining UK stores remain closed due to the government’s guidance around the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The struggling department store chain filed notice to appoint administrators on Monday.
