John Lewis Partnership chairman Sir Charlie Mayfield has been awarded an honorary degree of doctor of science from the University of Reading.
Mayfield was presented with the honorary degree from the university’s deputy vice-chancellor Professor Tony Downes at a ceremony yesterday.
Mayfield, who received a Knighthood for services to business last year, has been chairman of the John Lewis Partnership since 2007. He has also worked as development director and managing director of John Lewis.
“I am honoured and delighted to accept the honorary degree and become an honorary graduate of the University of Reading,” said Mayfield.
Professor Downes said Mayfield’s connection with the town of Reading went back to 2000 when he first joined the Partnership and trained at the John Lewis Reading branch.
“Sir Charlie’s rapid rise in the John Lewis Partnership has seen him become one of the most influential business leaders in the UK,” he said. “His dedication and accomplishments stand as a model for those of our students who aspire to succeed in the world of business.”
