John Lewis sales dropped last week as its fashion and homewares division dragged on the retailer’s performance.
The department store business said revenues fell 1.9% to £86.3m in the seven days to September 30.
Fashion sales slipped 1.8% during the week, but John Lewis said its autumn/winter ranges “performed well” in the period.
Beauty sales advanced 7%, with sales of fragrances climbing 14.2%.
John Lewis said home sales tumbled 5.1%, but its seasonal Christmas Villages and Halloween products both gained traction among customers, with the latter enjoying a 24% uplift in sales compared to the same period last year.
The retailer’s electricals and home technology revenues grew 1.4%, driven by strong sales in communication technology.
The release of the new GoPro 6 also boosted performance of action cameras.
Waitrose’s ‘contrasting fortunes’
Sister retailer Waitrose reported contrasting fortunes, with total sales excluding fuel jumping 2.4% to £130.1m during the week.
However, the upmarket grocer admitted this was driven by “a variety of promotions”.
Sales of frozen products increased 20%, while vegetarian ready meals were up at a similar rate of 23%.
Waitrose said its new selection of sandwiches also proved popular, driving sales across the wider range up 17%.
Beers, wines and spirits also posted a 14% uplift, as sales of organic wine, blended whiskey and a beer festival promotion aided performance.
