Value department store group The Original Factory Shop has revealed like-for-like growth of 4.2% in the five weeks to January 8 after womenswear and toys drove festive sales.
Total sales surged 11% over the Christmas period. Ladies’ fashion performed particularly well, with like-for-likes up 10%. Like-for-like sales of confectionery items rocketed 17%, while toys were up 12%.
The 174-store retailer said its “flexible buying model and broad range” enabled it to respond quickly to the changes in the weather, year-on-year.
Because of the mild weather in December compared to the snow the year before, sales of Wellington boots were down 50%, while sales of outdoor toys were up 200%.
The Original Factory Shop chief executive Angela Spindler said: “We know our customers love being able to shop locally for the whole family. This Christmas we presented them with our greatest ever breadth of offer across our 174 stores. This was enhanced by our extended range available online. While conditions remain challenging, in 2012 we are more committed than ever to offering our customers fantastic value with quality brands at factory shop prices.”
