The company said Clare will step down in September and that it was in the process of recruiting for a new chief executive. It will announce a replacement shortly.
Clare said: 'After 22 years with the group, 13 as chief executive, I have particularly enjoyed working with many outstanding and committed colleagues and am proud of what we have been able to achieve during that period. I feel it is time to pursue other interests and hand over the leadership for the next phase of the group's development.'
Chairman Sir John Collins added: 'On behalf of the board, I thank John for the significant contribution he has made to DSG International. In particular, in overseeing the group's development as Europe's leading specialist electricals retailer.'
Clare will step down at the AGM on September 5.
