DVD sales continue to soar, with first-quarter sales up 3.3 per cent on the same period last year.
111.6 million units have been sold so far this year, including almost 1 million Blu-ray DVDs, sales of which have increased 506 per cent.
The choice of Blu-ray, DVD or legal downloading has led to growing demand, according to the British Video Association (BVA), which released the figures.
Ratatouille is the bestseller of this year so far, with 1.2 million copies sold. High-definition accounts for a 1.2 per cent share of the video market.
BVA director-general Lavinia Carey said: “Last year proved a bumper year for the home entertainment industry, with 250 million videos sold and DVD accounting for 99 per cent of that.
“We are delighted to see that 2008’s half-year figures reveal an increased demand for home entertainment, especially in the challenging economic climate.”
