EBay and the sellers of the fake handbags were jointly ordered to pay damages to Hermes and eBay was told to post a notice of the ruling on its French site for three months.
An eBay spokesperson said: “EBay takes this issue of counterfeiting very seriously and we condemn it outright. The court ruling relates to past issues of seller verification. The court acknowledged that eBay has closed these loopholes, referencing the anti-counterfeiting measures spearheaded by the VeRO scheme, which brings rights owners and eBay together to tackle the menace of counterfeit goods.
“EBay remains committed to providing a high-quality market for sellers and consumers in France and committed to partner widely to tackle the supply of counterfeit goods.”
Luxury fashion brands Louis Vuitton and Dior, as well as cosmetics giant L’Oréal have also taken legal action against eBay over the sale of counterfeit goods.
