Carphone Warehouse’s telecommunications business is considering becoming a television provider after buying the UK assets of telecoms company Tiscali.
Carphone Warehouse chief executive Charles Dunstone told the Financial Times that he was examining whether Carphone Warehouse’s TalkTalk phone and broadband business will expand Tiscali’s TV service.
Dunstone told the FT that Talk Talk was considering developing Tiscali TV or participating in Project Canvas, a BBC-led initiative to provide television channels over broadband connections.
Carphone Warehouse, which finalised the £236m deal for Tiscali’s UK assets last week, has already moved away from selling just mobile phones in to new electricals product areas such as laptops, iPods and gaming consoles.
Carphone Warehouse, whose retail arm is part of a joint venture with US electricals giant Best Buy, will roll out electricals stores in spring next year under the Best Buy name.
Carphone Warehouse is gearing up for a demerger of its retail and telecoms business in March.
