Electricals and mobile technology giant Dixons Carphone is to axe 800 jobs as it overhauls operations to increase focus on customers, Retail Week can reveal.
The retailer, which owns Currys, PC World and Carphone Warehouse, told staff today about the job losses as some roles are removed and others created. Around 1,800 people will go into consultation, but 1,000 are expected to stay with the business.
In an email to employees, Dixons Carphone chief operating officer Mark Allsop said: “Our proposal will make team management structures clearer and establish the ways of working needed to deliver our vision – ‘We Help Everyone Enjoy Amazing Technology’. It also brings us another step forward on our journey to becoming One Business.
“We remain committed to our stores as part of an omnichannel future, a future where we offer the best of online and stores to our customers. As part of this, we want to make it easy for our customers to shop with us however they choose, and so we are making sure in-store roles are focused on giving a seamless customer experience and exceptional service across all our customer channels, whether online or in-store.”
The roles of retail manager, assistant manager and team leader will be removed in UK and Ireland Currys PC World stores, as well as the position of business adviser in branches without a Business Hub.
Four new roles will be created: sales manager; customer experience manager; operational excellence manager; and, in the biggest branches, a senior manager.
Allsop said the new roles would bring “a renewed focus on delivering world-class customer experience, and own the experience a customer receives from the moment they enter a store until they leave, as well as the operational processes behind the scenes, to create a seamless customer journey”.
Staff who are unable to take up new roles will leave Dixons Carphone in September. The 800 lost jobs equate to about 3% of Dixons Carphone’s UK and Ireland business.
