Claire’s Accessories UK sales fell 7.2% to £128.5m in the year to January 28, down from £138.5m the previous year, as the economic downturn reduced demand for its “discretionary” products.
The 460-store retailer does not break down profit figures for its European divison, of which the UK is included.
In documents filed at Companies House, the retailer’s directors said: “Consumer purchases of discretionary items, including our merchandise, generally decline during recessionary periods.”
However, the retailer said that it benefited from a focus on its product offer, in-store experience and strengthening its customer relationship to drive sales.
Claire’s Accessories closed a net five stores in the period.
Owner, US retailer Claire’s Stores, operates 3,071 stores in North America and Europe.
