Debenhams has fired the starter gun on its biggest ever Sale with discounts of up to 70% online from today and in stores from Boxing Day.

Debenhams will deliver some of its biggest ever Christmas discounts during its Boxing Day Sale, the crucial start to the January Sales period. It is the department store’s biggest Sale in its 232 year history, the retailer said.

The strategy will aim to jump start trade on the high street after poor trading in the lead up to Christmas because of the snow.

Shoppers can take advantage of 70% off womenswear and kidswear online at www.debenhams.com and 50% off most other lines. Bricks-and-mortar shoppers will have six hours to buy their bargains on Boxing Day as it falls on a Sunday this year.

Debenhams will counter the queues with more staff and will also open earlier than ever before on Monday 27.

On Boxing Day Debenhams will open stores at 9am to give customers time to browse, before opening the tills, according to Sunday trading regulations, at 10am.

Debenhams deputy chief executive Michael Sharp said: “As one of the few retailers open on Boxing Day, shoppers will be able to pick up some of the best designer deals on the high street and online.

“It really will be one of the most intensive shopping experiences we’ve have ever had. With limited trading hours, we have staff at the ready to deal with customer demand.”

Debenhams has traditionally pushed the button on a Sales bloodbath on the high street in the run up to Christmas, forcing many other rivals to follow suit.

However, many have already gone on Sale to counter the effects of the snow, which has dampened trade.
