George at Asda has signed deals with seven factories in the Midlands further increasing its support for manufacturing in the UK.
According to the Daily Mail, managing director of the fashion retailer Andrew Moore said George’s production in Britain had increased by 80% over the past year, although it started from “a very small base”.
Moore added: ‘It will grow – probably not as fast as we want it to grow – but it will grow and we will support it.’
The move follows a number of retailers who are seeking manufacturers closer to home such as Arcadia owner Sir Philip Green who hopes to source more British producers, while self-styled retail guru and Government advisor Mary Portas’s new business venture as a knicker retailer, aims to kick-start a recovery in British manufacturing.
