JD Sports will shut down its major distribution centre in Derby, resulting in just under 200 job losses, the BBC has reported.

Staff at JD Sports’ distribution centre at Derby Commercial Park were told they were being let go on Friday following a six-week consultation period.

The retailer is looking to see if there are alternative roles within the business for nearly 200 affected staff at the newly built 514,000 sq ft facility, which it first moved into three years ago.

JD Sports had signed a 20-year lease on the property. When it opened, the space had 56 dock doors, eight-level access doors and parking for 185 trailers.

A spokesperson for the retailer said: “We have made the difficult decision to close our Derby distribution centre and are working with all those affected to ensure they are fully supported through this challenging period.”

The news comes after the BBC reported in July this year that JD Sports had put the distribution centre under review.

The decision follows a strategic review of the retailer’s global supply chain network, which explored all options available to the business.
