John Lewis Partnership has become the latest retailer to cover the cost of VAT on period pants to ensure that period products are “affordable for all”.
John Lewis and Waitrose confirmed in a statement that they would reduce the cost of more than 30 period pants by 20% from this week, thereby covering the cost of the tax rather than passing it on to shoppers.
Shoppers will be able to purchase a pair of Love Luna period-proof full briefs for £8.33 rather than £10 at John Lewis when the change comes into place, for example.
John Lewis lingerie buyer Jo McKee said: “We’re known for offering great-quality underwear at affordable prices to our customers.
“We feel it’s the right thing to abolish this tax on period underwear, to make these essential products as accessible as possible.”
Waitrose sanitary products buyer Nicki Baggott added: “It’s a no-brainer that period underwear should be classed as a period product.
“It’s the right thing to do, and will help our customers save money on everyday essentials.”
JLP follows the footsteps of other retailers covering the cost of VAT on period pants, including Tesco and Marks & Spencer, as the Say Pants to the Tax campaign continues to gain momentum.
