London Fashion Week opened this morning, with an installation to pay tribute to British designer Alexander McQueen, who died last week.

London Fashion Week organisers The British Fashion Council erected a tribute wall last night in the reception area of the catwalk tent at Somerset House. Visitors are being invited to leave messages of condolence for McQueen. A spokesperson for the BFC said: “We hope to gather all the messages together at the end of Fashion Week and create a book of condolence to give to his family.”

London Fashion Week opened today with deisngers including Paul Costelloe, Maria Grachvogel and Hannah Marshall due to show on the catwalks today.

London Fashion Week, which runs from today until Tuesday 23 February, followed by a menswear day on Wednesday 24, will play host to a raft of big name design houses including Burberry, Pringle of Scotland, Matthew Williamson and Jonathan Saunders.

The exhibition has grown this season and will all take place under one roof at Somerset House, rather than the split venue of last year. New elements include a Swedish design collective called Made By Scandinavians and an expanded lingerie zone featuring brands including Donna Karan and Stella McCartney.

Retailers including Tesco and Monsoon are sponsors at the event.
