Fast-fashion giants Shein and Temu are set to be grilled by a parliamentary committee as part of an ongoing probe into employment rights.
The cross-party Business and Trade Committee has requested that representatives from the two online retailers appear before them at a hearing on January 7, according to Reuters.
Chaired by former Labour minister Liam Byrne, the Business and Trade Committee is investigating the government’s employment rights bill and how it will protect the rights of British workers.
The committee is also looking at how to ensure workers’ rights can be adequately protected against the importation of poor labour standards, including forced labour.
Shein’s general counsel for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Yinan Zhu, and Temu senior legal counsel Stephen Heary have been called as witnesses, according to the committee website.
The hearing comes after it was reported last month that Shein is still waiting on the UK’s financial regulator to approve its blockbuster IPO, following challenges over the retailer’s supply chain.
