Retail Week looks ahead to the next seven days, which include updates from Sports Direct, Carpetright and GFK’s consumer confidence tracker.

Sports Direct

Sports Direct will unveil its interim results on Monday. The City will hope for fewer bombshells than were in its full-year results in July when the group was hit by an eleventh-hour €674m Belgian tax bill that delayed the results. The business recorded a 6% slide in underlying EBITDA to £287.8m.

Despite House of Fraser having dragged down the group’s most recent results, when Ashley admitted he would not have bought the beleaguered chain with “the gift of hindsight”, Sports Direct is also pressing ahead with an extraordinary general meeting to win approval from shareholders to change the name of the group to Frasers.

Carpetright

The flooring specialist will hold an EGM on Wednesday in a bid to win approval from shareholders to take the company private. Carpetright has accepted a takeover bid from Meditor as it looks to refinance to repay debt and provide working capital. The struggling retailer’s chair Bob Ivell has the move will allow the business to “complete our recovery in the private arena and emerge as a stronger business”.

Consumer confidence

The monthly GfK Consumer Confidence survey for December will be released on Friday. Retailers will hope the result of the general election, securing a Conservative majority, will have buoyed consumer confidence, resulting in increased spend in the run-up to Christmas and into the new year.
