Footfall continued to fall this week, down 8.7 per cent on Wednesday against last year.

According to Experian's Retail Footfall Index, Monday was the only day footfall was up on 2006. It rose 1.3 per cent that day before dropping sharply to -5.9 per cent on Tuesday.

Experian head of business strategy Martin Davies said: “The festive mood among shoppers trailed off after Monday and by Tuesday activity on the high street began to lull. This weekend will be critical for those retailers that have failed to keep footfall flowing through their stores throughout the month.”

Although year-on-year figures have been weak, shopper numbers climbed week on week between December 10 and 16, traffic monitor FootFall reported.
