UK retailers suffered at the hands of Portugal on Saturday. Shopper traffic dropped 16.7 per cent compared with the previous Saturday, according to SPSL's Retail Traffic Index. SPSL director of knowledge management Tim Denison said: 'Few would have hoped for England to fail again at the quarter-finals but, nevertheless, retailers will perhaps see that even the gloom of this early exit has a silver lining and hope they will see a quick bounce back in the number of shoppers.'
However, supermarkets and off-licences may not agree. On Saturday alone Sainsbury's sold 4 million cans and bottles of beer and Tesco has off-loaded 7.5 million disposable barbeques and 45 million sausages since the tournament began.
