Former Marks & Spencer boss Sir Stuart Rose is to become chairman of fashion retailer Fat Face later this year when current incumbent Alan Giles steps down.

Giles, who has chaired the retailer for almost seven years, will depart Fat Face on July 26.

Rose, who last month was unveiled as the chairman of online grocer Ocado, will join the Fat Face board on March 1 ahead of his succession of Giles.

Rose is also chairman of young fashion group Blue Inc and holds non-executive roles at Land Securities and South African retail group Woolworths Holdings.

He has been on the advisory board for Bridgepoint, Fat Face’s private equity owner, since 2008.

Giles said: “Fat Face is now performing well and the company is positively positioned for a record year. With the brand on firm foundations and a strong management team in place I feel that it is now time to hand over to a new chairman. I am confident that Stuart, working with [chief executive] Anthony Thompson, will be a powerful driver of yet further success for Fat Face.”

In January, the retailer posted an 11% sales jump to £85.7m in its first half to December 1. This momentum continued through the Christmas period as sales increased 11% and online revenue soared 65% in the five weeks to January 5.

Rose said: “There are undoubtedly great opportunities ahead for the business and I look forward to working with Anthony and his team in helping them realise their ambitious growth plans for the brand.”
