Amazon has unveiled plans to open a new 1 million sq ft fulfilment centre in Leicestershire as its steps up its UK expansion strategy.
The centre, in Mountpark Bardon, near Coalville, will begin operations in the autumn and create 500 jobs, the etail giant said.
The new site is part of Amazon’s plan to create 2,500 permanent jobs in the UK in 2016. It will bring its total UK workforce to 14,500.
The etailer said it is planning to hire up and down the country at its head office, research and development centres, customer service centres, fashion photography studio and new Amazon Web Services (AWS) UK data centres.
It comes as speculation mounts that Amazon is gearing up to launch its grocery delivery service ‘Fresh’ in the UK.
Amazon is also ramping up its focus on fashion by hiring former M&S womenswear boss Frances Russell, according to reports this week.
The US etail giant has 10 fulfilment centres in the UK, including two in Doncaster and one each in Dunfermline, Dunstable, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay.
