How much is that doggy in the window? It is free - at Pets at Home anyway.

However, the sales ploy is not a barking-mad move by the business, but rather the result of a partnership with animal charity Blue Cross UK. The retailer hopes to bow-wow customers with its quirky campaign, which carries the strapline ‘think adoption first’.

From autumn the retailer will feature orphaned cats, dogs and bunnies as in-store guests, alongside animals that are actually for sale.

Pets at Home chief executive Matt Davies said the benevolence is part of a mantra designed to foster responsible pet ownership. Shoppers will be encouraged to make a donation to Blue Cross and to buy products for their new pet in-store.

The retailer, which was bought by Bridgepoint Capital last year, wants to communicate more with its shoppers. It is in the throes of revamping its web site, providing a resource for members of the newly launched Pets at Home club.
