Value retailer QD Stores will launch a fully transactional mobile-optimised website in time for Christmas.

The variety store group plans a “substantial” investment in its ecommerce operations and intends to sell the full QD product range on the website.

Few of its value retailer rivals have found a model that enables them to make money from selling low-priced products online. Poundland, 99p Stores and B&M Bargains do not have a transactional website.

Last week, Retail-week.com revealed Poundstretcher had scrapped its transactional website, which sold products from 99p.

Of the other large value players, only Wilkinson has a full online offer. QD –which has 39 stores and is aiming for 50 – already has an trial website that allows customers to buy a limited range of promotional stock.

QD managing director Justin Farrington Smith said the retailer may launch higher price point web exclusives on the new transactional site.
