WHSmith’s new book buy-back scheme helps customers recycle their unwanted books

In an exclusive partnership with Zeercle, the buy-back service for retailers, WHSmith is introducing the BookCycle scheme to its high street stores.

Customers can register online to trade in their secondhand books in exchange for money off their next WHSmith purchase.

Once registered, customers scan their books through the BookCycle website which uses Zeercle’s technology to work out a value for the book based on its condition, popularity and demand.

The unwanted books can then be taken to any participating WHSmith high street store where customers will receive an eGift card for the trade-in value which can be used online or in-store.

The majority of the books will be sold through Zeercle’s resale channels at discounted prices. Any books unsuitable for resale are recycled.

Ian Sanders, WHSmith group commercial development director, said: “This is a very exciting new scheme for WHSmith, and it makes great sense for our customers and our business to support a circular economy for books, as we aim to minimise our impact on the environment and support our local communities.

“The buy-back scheme really does offer a compelling reason for customers to recycle their secondhand books, and being able to exchange these for WHSmith e-gift cards gives them another great reason to shop with us.”
