Outdoor retailer Go Outdoors is investing £8m to open five shops in Scotland.
The first will open in Clydebank and will be the chain’s 20th UK store. The Sheffield-based retailer wants to open a further two shops in Glasgow, one in Edinburgh and one in Aberdeen.
Go Outdoors managing director John Graham said: “Scotland has huge strategic importance for Go Outdoors.” He added that its first Scottish shop, in Coatbridge, has been a “huge success” since opening two years ago and he is “confident our next five stores in Scotland will be just as popular”.
Last year the retailer laid out plans to open 19 stores in the UK over two years, creating 1,000 jobs.
In 2008 the group agreed an £18m refinancing package with Bank of Scotland Corporate, allowing it to progress with its expansion plans.
