Aldi has become the latest major grocer to scrap best before dates from fresh produce in a bid to crack down on food waste.
The discounter will remove the dates from around 60 of its own brand fruit and vegetable ranges, including apples, pears, citrus fruits, onions, carrots and potatoes.
Aldi said the move forms part of its target to halve food waste by 2030.
The retailer is the latest in a string of businesses to axe best before dates as the grocery sector attempts to help customers waste less.
The likes of Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have made similar moves.
Last week, Sainsbury’s removed the dates from a further 276 products, a shift it said was aimed at “giving customers more autonomy to make their own decisions on whether their food is good to eat, and preventing them from disposing of food too early”.
Aldi UK corporate responsibility director Liz Fox said: “One of the reasons we are the UK’s cheapest supermarket is because we cut down on waste wherever we see it.
“And by getting rid of these dates on packaging, we can help customers get even better value by reducing the amount of food that goes to waste at home.
“This latest step, together with our partnerships with Neighbourly and Too Good To Go, is all part of our efforts to provide affordable, sustainable and responsible products for all our customers.”
